A Life Rewritten: Medicine, Migration, and Meaning

Sometimes, a good meal can change the course of a life. Just ask Dr. Julia Novikov (34), who recently joined Reuth TLV as a physician-in-training — all thanks to a cookbook created by our patients and staff.

Dr. Novikov, who made aliyah from Russia three years ago, left behind a successful career in colorectal surgery in Moscow to start a new chapter in Israel. Her journey to Reuth was unexpected, sparked not only by her professional passion but also by a deeply personal connection.

“I grew up with strong Jewish values passed down from my grandparents,” she recalls. “In the final year of medical school, I took part in Taglit to experience Israel firsthand. I fell in love with the land, the people, and the idea of building a life here.”

After the outbreak of war in Russia, Julia and her husband – also a physician – made the move to Israel, supported by the Journey for Doctors organization. Her husband quickly found work in cardiology, while Julia began exploring new paths in medicine. That’s when a surprising gift arrived: a Reuth Hospital cookbook filled with recipes from staff and patients, translated into several languages — including Russian.

“I started cooking from it and was touched by how connected the hospital was to its community. I read about the hospital, its reputation, and its approach to patient care — and something clicked. I knew I had to be a part of it,” she says.

Now interning in Reuth’s rehabilitation department, Dr. Novikov brings a unique blend of surgical expertise, research in pelvic floor health, and a growing passion for holistic patient care. “As a rehabilitation doctor, I meet diverse patients every day. I’m learning constantly and not just about medicine — I’m getting to know people’s lives, their stories, and their strength.”

What stands out to her most? “The supportive and welcoming atmosphere. The staff is warm, professional, and truly multidisciplinary. Everyone works together — from nurses and therapists to senior physicians — to create a healing environment.”

Currently expecting her first child, Julia is not just building a new career, but also a new life in Israel. Looking ahead, she dreams of combining her rehabilitation work with her background in colorectal surgery, with a focus on women’s health — a field close to her heart.

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Novikov to the Reuth family — and grateful that a shared love of food and community brought her to our doorstep.
